Thanks for providing a forum for getting the word out. The Internet isn't always pretty, but it does offer opportunities to level the playing field, sometimes even with organizations with far more resources.

The bottled water industry's leader (Nestle) makes significant use of PR resources in its attempts to enforce some fairly predatory actions in small rural towns - the source of most of its “spring” water brands.

For example, Nestle’s sued the tiny town of Fryeburg, Maine five times in an attempt to force a permit for a truck loading station in a residential area. It's a sad episode, and the PR spin has been nauseating, to say the least.

Their actions in the nearby town of McCloud, CA are what prompted me (a marketing guy with 22+ years experience) to start the StopNestleWaters.org blog, hoping to counter the company's considerable PR might (just a little bit) on the Internet.

Advertising & marketing practitioners traditionally rank somewhere just above serial killers in public polls of trustworthiness, and we're touching on one of the reasons why...

Hi Dean,

As always, a thought provoking post. I have given up drinking out of plastic bottles (my light blue Sigg is constantly at my side). And love the fact that places like Backspace have stopped selling any drinks in plastic.

But your greater point - the 'advocacy' of products (or services) that no longer stand up to most people's ethics - deserves amplification, too. I'll be crafting a response over on my blog.

Thanks for sharing.
